Materials  –

Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran:

Pure Black (602)

Dolphin Blue (637)

Paper White (601)

4.5mm hook

Yarn needle

 

Abbreviations – (US in brackets)

ch = chain (ch)

slst = slip stitch (slst)

dc = double crochet (sc)

htr = half treble crochet (hdc)

tr = treble crochet (dc)

Special stitches  –

Half double treble or hdtr (htr) = this stitch is similar to a double treble but slightly shorter and more compact. To work a hdtr (htr) – yarn over hook twice, insert into st or sp, yarn over and pull up loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over pull through all three loops.

UK Pattern Instructions

Starting with Black, make a slip knot, ch3, slst into intial ch to form a ring

Rnd 1 – ch3 (counts as tr), 11tr into the ring, slst into top of beg ch3, fasten off [12tr] (to create a highlight in the eye, work the last tr of this round in white)

Rnd 2 – Attach Blue yarn into the top of any st from rnd1, ch3 (counts as first tr) tr in the same st, 2tr into the top of the remaining 11 stitches, slst into top of beg ch3 [24tr]

Rnd 3 – ch 3 (counts as tr), 2tr in following st, *1tr in the next, 2tr in the following st, rep from * 10 more times, slst into top of beg ch3, fasten off [36tr]

Rnd 4 – Working in the back loops now, attach White yarn into any st from rnd3, ch1 (doesn’t count as st) dc in the same st, dc in the next, 2dc in the following, *dc in each of the next two sts, 2dc in the following st, rep from * 10 more times, slst into initial dc [48dc]

Rnd 5 –Working in both loops from now on *work (dc, htr), (2htr), (2tr), (2hdtr), (2hdtr), (2tr), (2htr), (htr, dc) over the next 8 sts, dc in the following 16st, rep from * once more, slst into initial dc [64sts]

Rnd 6 – dc in the next 7st, ch2 (between the 2 pairs on hdtr), dc in the following 11 sts, 2dc in the next, *dc in the following 3sts, 2dc in the next, rep from * once more, dc in the next 12 sts, ch2, dc in the following 11sts, 2dc in the next, **dc in the following 3sts, 2dc in the next, rep from ** once more, dc in the last 5 sts, slst into initial dc and fasten off [70dc, 4chs]

US Pattern Instructions

Starting with Black, make a slip knot, ch3, slst into intial ch to form a ring

Rnd 6 – sc in the next 7st, ch2 (between the 2 pairs on htr), sc in the following 11 sts, 2sc in the next, *sc in the following 3sts, 2sc in the next, rep from * once more, sc in the next 12 sts, ch2, sc in the following 11sts, 2sc in the next, **sc in the following 3sts, 2sc in the next, rep from ** once more, sc in the last 5 sts, slst into initial sc and fasten off [70sc, 4chs]
